Biography
Background Helen Klaebe is Adjunct Professor of Creative Writing in the Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice Faculty. Previously Klaebe served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate Research & Engagement) in the Division of Research and Innovation. There she led: research development and training engagement activities; contributed to the development of QUT’s research-intensive culture; developed and manages an international standard training culture; and managed and provided advice on supporting higher research degree research (2018-21). Klaebe was a Project Expert on ARC Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Grant, Design Options for the Future Doctorate, 2016-2019. In 2019 and was elected and served on the Australian Council of Graduate Research (ACGR) 2018-20. Klaebe also achieved the status of Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Klaebe was the Dean of Research and Research Training in the Division of Research and Commercialisation (2016-17) and Assistant Dean of Research & International Engagement in QUT’s Creative Industries Faculty from 2012-2015. From 2008-2011 she was the Head of Post Graduate Coursework in QUT’s Creative Industries Faculty, and also undertook a Qld Smithsonian Fellowship in Washington D.C. Klaebe is a Professor of Creative Industries, with her contributions to research in the areas of: creative writing; transmedia storytelling; non texted-based narrative methodologies; oral history; public history; urban/regional development; interdisciplinary research, broad participation, engaging multiple stakeholders; historical place-based experiences/exhibitions; and in the evaluation of the economic, cultural and audience impact of public art programs. Klaebe's research is highly collaborative with industry and community, as well as being interdisciplinary in nature to ensure impactful applied outcomes for partners. Her fifteen year research reputation has been built on implementing creative ways of writing and presenting stories for communities, institutions and organisations. Klaebe regularly consults as a public historian particularly focusing on engaging communities in storytelling, and regularly designs and manages co-creative media workshops for a range of commercial and public sector organisations. Klaebe is currently a Chief Investigator, Social Impact Evaluation, commercial research consultancy, Puuya Foundation of Lockhart River (2020-2023) and Chief Investigator, The Role of the Creative Arts in Regional Australia: A Social Impact Model - LP180100477 (2019-2022), and was a Chief Investigator on two previous ARC Linkage projects: Digital Storytelling and co creative media: the role of community arts and media in propagating and coordinating population- wide creative practice (LP110100127) and Remembering the Past, Imagining the Future: Embedding Narrative and New Media in Urban Planning (LP0882274). She is also the author of: Onward Bound: the first 50 years of Outward Bound Australia (2005); Sharing Stories: a social history of Kelvin Grove (2006) and co authored The Social Impact of Creative Arts in Australian Communities (release date, Oct 2021). Teaching
Helen Klaebe is the Strategic Advisor for QUT’s International Projects Unit delivering high quality capacity building programs in developing countries for QUT. IPU's mission is to promote the university's engagement in international development projects and positively contribute to development outcomes, broadening QUT's international and industry networks and contributing to our research and innovation agenda. Since 2018 Klaebe has led $7.5million in international development consultancies (Australia Awards programs). Since 2001, IPU has delivered more than 200 projects in the areas of:

- private sector development and capacity building.
IPU is experienced in delivering projects in South and West Asia, Indonesia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, PNG and the Pacific, Africa and Latin America. Klaebe is also a Professor of Creative Writing in the Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice Faculty, is a Principal Fellow HEA (UK), and has extensive expertise and academic experience in graduate research training and the professional development of researchers.
