Biography
Yasu Santo is a maker, fabricator and tinkerer in both physical and digital domains. His current research focuses on designing systems to allow occupant-led (DIY) facilities management and democratic use of office environments. His preferred method of research is by speculating possible solutions and testing them by designing, making, and deploying prototypes.He was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association (AA) in London and received AA Diploma and RIBA part 2 in 1995. During his study, he was fascinated by the power and possibilities of computers and electronics and has been tinkering with them ever since. After graduation, he remained at the AA as an electronic media tutor and the Electronic Media Lab supervisor until August 2000, while engaging with international competitions, developing multimedia presentations for property developers, and various other architectural and artistic commissions. He moved to Hong Kong and became a full-time lecturer at School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in September 2000 and began teaching a wide range of subjects in architecture, interior, industrial and interactive media design. He also led many international online collaborations and worked with students and academics from all over the world. He relocated to Brisbane, Australia, in 2006 to continue his research and teaching at Queensland University of Technology. He has been actively engaged in lecturing, exhibiting, organising workshops, and serving as an external examiner and judge on various occasions in different parts of the world.
