Biography

Tan Yigitcanlar is an eminent Australian researcher with international recognition and impact in the field of urban studies and planning. He is an Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at the School of Architecture and Built Environment, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Along with this post, he carries out an Honorary Professor role at the School of Technology, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil, and the Founding Director position of the Australia-Brazil Smart City Research and Practice Network.

He has been responsible for research, teaching, training and capacity building programs on the fields of urban studies and planning in esteemed Australian, Brazilian, Finnish, Japanese, and Turkish universities. He is an eminent Australian scholar with international recognition, reputation and impact on policy, practice and society. His research aims to address contemporary urban planning and development challenges—that are economic, societal, spatial, governance or technology related in nature. The main foci of his research interests, within the broad field of urban studies and planning, are clustered around the following three interdisciplinary themes.

The first research theme focuses on ‘Smart Technologies, Communities, Cities and Urbanism’. In this stream of research, he examines the disruptive effects, along with the beneficial impacts, of urban technologies and digital transformation of urban services and infrastructures on our cities and societies. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Smart urban technology; Smart city; Smart community; Smart precinct; Smart urbanism; Smart mobility (e.g., autonomous driving, mobility-as-a-service); Citizen science (e.g., crowdsourcing, volunteered geographic information); Artificial intelligence; and Gamification and gamified applications.

The second research theme focuses on ‘Knowledge-Based Development of Cities and Innovation Districts’. In this stream of research, he scrutinises the impacts of global knowledge and innovation economy on our cities and societies, along with developing strategies for space and place making for knowledge-based activities in cities. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Knowledge-based urban and regional development; Knowledge and innovation economy; Knowledge industry, business and worker; Urban innovation system; Urban knowledge and innovation space; Innovation district; and Place making and branding.

The third research theme focuses on ‘Sustainable and Resilient Cities, Communities and Urban Ecosystems’. In this stream of research, he explores existing and prospective urban and environmental dynamics and challenges to determine strategies for planning and designing sustainable, resilient, responsive and liveable natural and built urban environments. His research in this theme covers, but not limited to, the following topics: Sustainable urban and infrastructure development; Sustainable transport; Urban and environmental sustainability performance assessment; Water sensitive urban design; Zero waste; Climate change; Urban heat island; and Post-Anthropocentric urbanism.

He has been providing research consultancy services to all tier governments (i.e., federal, state, local)—along with for international corporations, and non-governmental organisations—in Australia and overseas. These services helped government and industry form their key strategies, become more resilient, and better prepared for the emerging disruptive conditions. He has received over $3 million funding from research consultancy projects and national competitive grant programs.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of ‘Elsevier’s Smart Cities Book Series’, and carries out senior editorial positions in the following high-impact journals: ‘International Journal of Knowledge-Based Development’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Journal of Knowledge Management’, ‘Energies’, ‘International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology’, ‘Global Journal of Environmental Science and Management’, ‘Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity’, ‘Asia Pacific Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship’, ‘Journal of Urban Technology’, ‘Knowledge Management Research and Practice’, ‘Measuring Business Excellence’, ‘Urban Science’, ‘Land Use Policy’, ‘Sustainable Cities and Society’, ‘Cities’, and ‘International Journal of Information Management’.

He undertook the Chairman role of the annual ‘Knowledge Cities World Summit’ series between 2007 and 2019, and under this brand organised 12 conferences in many locations of the world. These locations were: Monterrey (Mexico); Shenzhen (China); Melbourne (Australia); Bento Gonçalves (Brazil); Matera (Italy); Istanbul (Turkey); Tallinn (Estonia); Daegu (Korea); Vienna (Austria); Arequipa (Peru); Tenerife (Spain); and Florianopolis (Brazil). He also contributed in the organisation of other over two-dozen international conferences in various capacities. He has also delivered over 60 keynote and invited talks at the prestigious international academic conferences and industry events.

He has disseminated his research findings extensively in over 500 publications. These publications also include well over 200 articles published in high-impact journals, and the following 14 key reference books published by esteemed international publishing houses: ‘Smart Cities and Innovative Urban Technologies’ (Routledge, 2021); ‘Approaches, Advances, and Applications in the Sustainable Development of Smart Cities’ (MDPI, 2020); ‘Geographies of Disruption’ (Springer, 2019); ‘Planning, Development and Management of Sustainable Cities’ (MDPI, 2019); ‘Urban Knowledge and Innovation Spaces’ (Routledge, 2018); ‘Technology and the City’ (Routledge, 2016); ‘Knowledge and the City’ (Routledge, 2014); ‘Sustainable Urban Water Environment’ (Edward Elgar, 2014); ‘Building Prosperous Knowledge Cites’ (Edward Elgar, 2012); ‘Knowledge-Based Development for Cities and Societies’ (IGI Global, 2010); ‘Sustainable Urban and Regional Infrastructure Development’ (IGI Global, 2010); ‘Rethinking Sustainable Development’ (IGI Global, 2010); ‘Knowledge-Based Urban Development’ (IGI Global, 2008); and ‘Creative Urban Regions’ (IGI Global, 2008).

His research outputs have been cited about 13,000 times, resulting in an h-index of over 60 (Google Scholar). According to the science-wide author databases of standardised citation indicators (https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/2), he is ranked #1 in Australia and #16 worldwide in 2019 (among the 8,522 scientists in the sub-field of Urban and Regional Planning based on 2019 single year data composite score in Table S7), and ranked #1 in Australia and #47 worldwide in all times (based on career-long data composite score in Table S6). For this achievement, he is recognised as an ‘Australian Research Superstars’ in Social Sciences at The Australian’s 2020 Research Special Report.

  • An exemplar overview of a prospective PhD research is provided below.

    Research topic:

    • Smart urban technology-driven approaches to sustainable development

    Research title:

    • Prospects and constraints of smart urban technology-driven approaches to sustainable development

    Research background:

    • The prospects of smart urban technologies range from expanding infrastructure capacity to generating new services, from reducing emissions to engaging the public, from minimising human errors to improved decision-making, and from supporting sustainable development to improving performances of commercial enterprises and cities. The most popular technologies in the context of cities include, but are not limited to, internet-of-things (IoT), autonomous vehicles (AV), Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), bigdata, 5G/6G, robotics, blockchain, cloud computing, 3D printing, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI). These disruptive technologies are critical in transforming our cities into smarter and more sustainable ones, and have the potential to address the complex urbanisation challenges of our time. Nonetheless, in the case of misapplication, these technologies can also generate undesired externalities to our cities and communities.

    Research method:

    • Data collection, curation and analytics
    • Policy and best practice analyses
    • Qualitative, quantitative and spatial analyses
    • Scientometric, bibliometric and meta analyses
    • Survey and interview design and execution
    • Systematic literature reviews

    Research outcome:

    • Insights into prospects and constraints of technology-driven approaches to sustainable development
    • Frameworks to conceptualise technology adoption to achieve sustainable outcomes
    • Roadmaps to operationalise technology adoption to achieve sustainable outcomes
    • Dissemination of study findings in academic, professional and online media outlets
