Biography

I am a Professor of Media and Communication, a computational social scientist and Associate Dean (Research) in the Creative Industries Faculty at QUT. My research is focused on developing data science tools and methods to analyse the production and consumption of digital cultural products – particularly music. I have (co)authored/(co)edited nine books on these topics over the years – Most recently I published the 3rd edition of ‘The Music Industry: Music in the Cloud’ at Polity Press and am excited to be working on a new book project about short video platforms to be published in 2021. I publish my journal based work in Social Media + Society, Technovation, International Journal of Media Management, Journal of Media Business Studies, Journal of Music Business Studies, Popular Music & Society, etc. I am engaged as strategic advisor to startups in the music tech space and am on the editorial boards of a number of academic journals in my field. Previously I was the Head of the School of Communication and Deputy Director of Digital Media Research Centre, both at QUT. I have served as a faculty member at Northeastern University (Boston, USA), Jonkoping International Business School (Jonkoping, Sweden) and Karlstad University (Karlstad, Sweden). I received my Ph.D. from Karlstad University in Media and Communication Studies and I am an MScEng graduate from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden). Before my academic career, I worked in the European media and telecom industry where I held positions as business development manager and strategy consultant.
