Nora Kinnunen is a redirective designer, design educator and researcher working across disciplines. Her research interests include societal transformation for sustainable futures, with particular focus on the role of design and craft in directing change in practices.
Nora is currently a PhD Candidate at the School of Design, with her research focusing on craft futures, and exploring how professional craftspeople reconcile their craft-making practices with external demands of their business. She is also a Research Associate at the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment on the ARC Linkage project Innovative procurement theories to optimise educational outcomes per total cost of school facilities.
Nora has extensive experience in private practice – as an aeronautical engineer and project manager, and more recently as a furniture designer co-managing a craft-based furniture design and manufacturing company. In addition to her work as a researcher she is also sessional academic, teaching theory and research methods at the School of Design. Nora hosts The Endangered Skill – a project exploring the relationality of design, craft and making. It acknowledges the escalating crisis of unsustainability and calls for a redirection of material culture towards sustainable futures. The ambition of The Endangered Skill is to develop craft as a transformative practice through Craft Futures: a re-imagining of culture that is centred on craft as a sustainable mode of production and the basis for sustainable ways of living.
Teaching focus: design and sustainability; design psychology; design in society; research methods; professional studies.
