Biography
Dr. Mimi Tsai is a national and international expert in designing and planning for health and wellbeing. Mimi advocates for the importance of health-aware design and planning approaches, environmental gerontology, and sustainable design. In her work as an academic, she applies co-creative digital storytelling as an innovative approach to engage marginalised communities. She has an exemplary track record of collaborative research projects and published findings in top tier peer reviewed journals. She has previously been involved in and awarded research grants that delivered meaningful and successful outcomes. In all her endeavours, Mimi sustains influence and engagement with partners and stakeholders from conception and beyond completion, with a strong commitment to delivering impactful environmental and social outcomes.
She is the Chair of the National and Queensland Advocacy Committee of Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), which voices and influences decisions within political, economic and social institutions. Her advocacy and research amplifies landscape architects' voices on relevant issues in Healthy Communities, Urban Green Infrastructure and Liveable Cities and aims to inform and influence government and allied professions. Her ongoing contributes are helping to establish AILA as the leader on national and local matters and key issues including QBCC licensing and the 2032 Olympic Games in the area of city planning with the state and local governments. Mimi’s time as the Creative Committee of AILA in 2020 led to the success of 2020 AILA Festival, Land-e-Scape: Reset - Towards Healing. Internationally, she is on the Advisory Board of the Alliance for Healthy Cities, Taiwan and is dedicated to promoting healthy cities and age friendly environments around Asian cities.
She also chairs the Australasian Early Career Urban Research Network with the aim to build up a national platform and focus on employability and increased research visibility to connect early career researchers purposefully to a wider urban research network.
Her specialties include landscape design, environmental psychology, landscape experience design, environmental gerontology, place-based storytelling and co-created media digital storytelling.
