Biography
Dr Zhanying Zhang is Associate Professor of Bioprocess Engineering at the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy (CAB, previously known as Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities – CTCB) at QUT. He is also an Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellow (2018-2021).
A/Prof Zhang’s primary research areas are bioprocessing and biorefining and his research aims to solve real world problems in energy, resource and waste. His current projects and project activities include (1) lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment and biorefining for biofuels, biochemicals and bio-based materials, (2) food waste processing and biorefining for nutraceuticals and value-added products, and (3) animal waste and sludge processing for resource recovery and waste management cost reduction.
A/Prof Zhang has published many research articles in Q1 journals including Green Chemistry, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, Bioresource Technology. He has also been granted 12 patents in 3 patent families in the area of biomass pretreatment and processing.
Experience
A/Prof Zhang has many years research experience in development of bioprocessing and biorefinery technologies for value-adding to by-products and wastes generated from agricultural, forestry, food and wastewater treatment industries. His research aims to develop industrially applicable and sustainable technologies to solve the real world problems.
A/Prof Zhang was a Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the Syngenta Centre for Sugar Cane Biofuels Development, Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities, and Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy since he joined the Queensland University of Technology in 2008.
