Dr Joanne Clarke is a lecturer in the School of Public Health and Social Work, Faculty of Health, Queensland University of Technology.

Dr Clarke is a social worker who has worked extensively with homeless families, domestic violence and family law. She has also worked in sector development with Queensland Council of Social Services and been an integral part of collaborative community development programs, such as establishing a microfinance initiative with homeless families in Far North Queensland.

Some of Dr Clarke’s experience includes coordination of the Regional Domestic Violence Service on the Sunshine Coast and direct support of women and children experiencing domestic and family violence, as well as delivery of community education programs and social action campaigns. Her interest in working with women and violence led her to study to become a family law mediator, an area in which she has practised for several years. Her most recent area of research is focused on improving the experience for women with histories of domestic violence engaged in family court cases.

Dr Clarke has an interest in how the intersections of class, race, ability, sexuality and ethnicity combine with gender and influence the experiences of violence and therefore shapes the many responses required to address violence in our communities.
