Biography
Jan Recker is Full Professor in the School of Management at the QUT Business School. Prior to this appointment, he was Professor and inaugural Woolworths Chair of Retail Innovation in QUT''s Information System School. He is a Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation and a Fellow of the Liechtenstein Chapter of the Association for Information Systems. Jan has won several awards for his research, most of which is currently in the areas of Organizational Innovation, Conceptual Modelling and Green IS. Organizational Innovation describes practices by which organizations seek to improve their business models and provide new products and services to consumers. Conceptual Modelling is a popular approach for analyzing and building software as well as organizational systems, by starting with models of how an organization works. I focus specifically on process models. Green IS concerns how organizations can leverage information systems to improve their ecological footprint, and how individuals can engage in environmentally sustainable behaviors at work. Jan is ranked among the top Information Systems researchers globally, as measured by publications in the discipline's top journals. He has won a number of awards for his teaching in these areas. He has also taught undergraduate and postgraduate students from other faculties taking IT elective units at both Gardens Point and at Carseldine. He is also teaching coursework units to higher degree research students at QUT and elsewhere. His book Scientific Research in Information Systems: A Beginner's Guide is a mandatory textbook in many doctoral research courses all over the globe. He has held teaching appointments in Australia, Europe, Asia, among others.
Experience
Jan's research has been funded by organisations such as Woolworths, Suncorp, CBA, SAP and others. He has provided research, consultancy, training and advisory services to over thirty Australian organizations, including Hargraves, Woolworths, Australian Federal Police, DHS, Queensland Government, Ausenco, IP Australia, Energex, CPA Australia, Landgate, Stanwell, QSuper and others. Having been the Woolworths Chair of Retail Innovation, his track record in working with Woolworths spans back to 2009 and includes consultancy services, directly funded research projects and invited keynotes at corporate conferences. He is a regular invited keynote speaker at Australian technology and innovation events such as BiiG, Hargreaves Connect and others.
