Biography
Beryl has two major interrelated research interests: the teaching of grammar (linguistics) & the sociology of education, especially as it interfaces with social justice. Her 79 publications are listed on QUT eprints and altogether have been downloaded in excess of 50 000 times. Many of these works have been cited numerous times on Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. Beryl's most significant industry publications are:- Exley, B. & Kervin, L. (2013). Her lastest DVD, Reading & Viewing for Comprehension (Australian Children’s Television Foundation, 2012) has the esteemed honour of being named as a finalist for two major national awards: the "eLearning Industry Excellence Awards 2012" & the "ATOM Awards 2012".

From 2009-2013, Beryl was a Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council Linkage Project LP0990289, "Digital Learning & Print Literacy: A design experiment for the reform of low socio-economic culturally diverse schools". The project’s goal was the production of equitable literacy outcomes for students from low socio-economic, Indigenous & migrant backgrounds. The project employed a research-based intervention model to examine the relationship between teaching & learning print literacies & digital literacies. Beryl focused on the role of language, particularly as it applies across diverse cultural groups & to disparate curriculum areas.

Professional memberships and associations
- Beryl is an active member of the Australian Literacy Educators` Association (ALEA), and from 2006 to 2013 served as the ALEA Queensland State Director. In 2013 she co-convened the AATE/ALEA Joint National Conference for 830 national and international delegates.
- Since 2005 she has been the Australian representative on IDOC (International Oceania Development Committee), a committee that works with developing nations across Oceania to advance literacy teaching and learning. In 2015 Beryl was invited by the International Literacy Association board to take the role of international Chair of IDOC.
- Since 2013, Beryl has been the ALEA Publications Director, overseeing the suite of ALEA journals and occasional publications.
- Beryl has previously been a judge for National Literacy & Numeracy Week Awards (DEEWR) and Teaching Australia Awards and still judges the Short Story Section of the English Teachers Association of Queensland (ETAQ) awards for Years 6 & 7.
Teaching
During her time at QUT, Beryl has taught in English Curriculum & Literacy Education units in the BEd Primary, BEd Secondary, BEd Early Childhood, & MEd Coursework. She has also led research units in the BEd Research pathways program and coordinated field experience units in the undergraduate program. Beryl adopts a socio-critical approach to curriculum planning, implementation & assessment and has a special interest in:

Since 2011, Beryl has been recognised as a "Higher Degree Research Supervisor Accreditation Level 1" academic. Beryl is currently the Masters of Education Course Coordinator, overseeing approximately 1200 students enrolled in the study areas of Career Development, Early Childhood Teaching, Early Years, General Studies, Inclusive Education, Leadership and Management, School Guidance and Counselling, Teacher-Librarianship and TESOL.

- early career teachers' experiences in Catholic schools
- pedagogic dilemmas with curricular reform in moral education
- teachers' responses to communication about non-heterosexuality
- implementing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the Australian Curriculum English.

- teachers' knowledge of children's literature
- the construction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students' identities in schools
- critical literacy in international ESL contexts
- the formation of multi-ethnic pedagogic identities through institutionalized education
- teachers' accounts of a data driven curriculum
- narrative research in an Indigenous community
- cultural hybridity in Indigenous/non-Indigenous communications
- teachers' experiences of high-stakes assessments.
Beryl is currently the Masters of Education Course Coordinator, overseeing approximately 1200 students enrolled in the study areas of Career Development, Early Childhood Teaching, Early Years, General Studies, Inclusive Education, Leadership and Management, School Guidance and Counselling, Teacher-Librarianship and TESOL.
Experience
Beryl has been a classroom teacher for 11 years, teaching in early and middle years classrooms in Education Queensland and Independent Schools Queensland. Beryl has undertaken QUT sponsored sabbaticals to teach and research in one remote Indigenous community in the Torres Straits (2008). She was a sessional tutor in sociology of education, Studies of the Society and Environment curriculum and general teaching practices at Griffith University at Mt Gravatt and Logan campuses from 1998 - 2001. From 2001 she has been an academic staff member in English Curriculum and Literacy Education at QUT. She has completed numerous consultancies with
