High Poverty Schooling, Teacher education for high poverty settings, Low SES schooling, Teacher staffing and redistribution, Social Justice, Sociology of Education
My background is originally in primary education, then as an outdoor educator with Outward Bound and I later spent over ten years across various educational school and university settings in Japan. I have taught and researched in the area of sociology of education with a strong focus on teacher education targeting disadvantage, Blended Learning and Work Integrated Learning. My other research interests include the impact of ethnicity and technology on schooling, Australian multicultural policy and Japanese Education.
In 2008, together with Dr. Jo Lampert, I co-developed the Exceptional Teachers for Disadvantaged Schools program (ETDS) which created a pathway for high quality pre-service teachers to be better prepared for teaching roles within low SES schools. The program identifies the highest-achieving pre-service teachers in our Bachelor of Education program (based on their first 2 years at university), and offers them a specialised curriculum and supported practicum experience in a network of partner schools. By working closely with Education Queensland and partner low SES schools, the program channels these exceptional pre-service teachers into those low SES schools where they will have the greatest impact.
In 2013, the ETDS was expanded with the support of the Origin Foundation and Social Ventures Australia. I am currently co-director of the National ETDS (NETDS) program that is sharing and expanding the model with universities across Australia, working together to develop a national resource of highly-qualified teachers committed to and prepared for changing outcomes for disadvantaged children and youth.
I currently teach in the areas of sociology of education with a strong focus on teacher education targeting disadvantage, Blended Learning and Work Integrated Learning. I am coordinator of EDB003 Teaching and Learning Studies 3, Practicing Education and lecture in other core sociocultural foundation units.
