Biography
Yasir Ali is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Queensland University of Technology. His research interests lie primarily in the areas of traffic flow modelling, traffic safety, decision making, advanced data analysis techniques (e.g., mathematical modelling, econometrics, machine learning) in transport engineering, and pavement materials. He is on the expert panel of several transport journals including Accident Analysis & Prevention, Transportation Research Record, IEEE, Journal of Advanced Transportation, etc.Personal details

Dr Ali has taught various university level courses in Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the University of Queensland (UQ), COMSATS Institute of Technology, and National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) since 2012. The following descriptions cover the brief content of courses and roles of Dr Ali’s involvement in these courses.
Course: Statistical and Optimisation Methods for Engineers
This unit offered an introduction to statistical methods and optimisation methods useful for engineers in practice. It included the following: the process of stochastic research, linear regression analysis, simultaneous equation model, count data model, time series, classical optimisation methods, Nonlinear, geometric and dynamic programming
Course: Traffic Flow Theory & Analysis
The objectives of this module were to: (1) describe the interactions between infrastructure and human behaviour in transport systems and explain the role of transport and traffic engineering; (2) explain the key parameters of vehicular traffic flow and their relationships using the fundamental diagram; use queuing theory to model traffic flow and delays; (3) describe the methods to collect, analyse, and visualise traffic data; describe the indices that measure the traffic flow characteristics of a road; (4) describe how traffic congestion forms and propagates in space and time as well as discussion strategies to mitigate congestion; (5) apply traffic flow theory to the design and operation of traffic facilities such as intersections, roundabouts, and traffic signals.
Course: Transportation Engineering
This module introduced basic principles and tools to design, plan, evaluate, analyse, manage and control transportation systems. The aim was to enable students to identify, formulate, examine, and solve transportation engineering problems. The major topics included transportation system, planning and management, geometric design of roads and intersections, structural design of pavement, pavement materials, traffic flow and analysis, and traffic management and control.
Course: Probability and Statistics
This unit provided a comprehensive introduction to ‘probability concepts’ and ‘statistical methods & applications’. The course gave a hands-on experience of descriptive statistics, probability, statistical inferences, regression and statistical modelling using statistical Learning tools such as Excel, SAS 9.1.3, SPSS (PASW18.0).
