Biography
Thomas Tenkate has lectured in environmental health at the QUT School of Public Health since 2003. He currently coordinates the postgraduate teaching programs for the School.
Background
Thomas has worked in the environmental health field since 1990, predominantly for Queensland Health (10 years).
His work experience includes a wide variety of environmental health roles:
- investigatory
- management
- policy
- advisory.
He also manages a large number of local, state and national projects.
Awards
- 2007: QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Performance Award
- 2007: Environmental Health Professional of the Year, Environmental Health Australia (Queensland Branch)
- 2003: QUT School of Public Health, Outstanding Contribution Award – Academic Staff
- 2002: Ken Brookes Memorial Prize, Australian Institute of Environmental Health.

Teaching Interests
Dr Tenkate coordinates and teaches in PUB332 Sustainable Environments for Health.
He also teaches across the postgraduate environmental health program, particularly in:

- PUN466 Communicable Diseases
- PUN467 Public Health Risk Assessment
- PUN617 Environmental Health Management.
Experience
Professional practice
Thomas is actively involved with a number of professional organisations.
He is the National President and a director on the natioinal board of Environmental Health Australia, the peak professional association for environmental health practitioners.
He has had a long involvement in professional development by contributing to committees and elected positions at a state level with Environmental Health Australia.
Thomas is also actively involved with the journal, Environmental Health; he is on its advisory board and is the Book Review Editor.
