Biography

Jen Seevinck is an electronic artist, researcher and lecturer in Interactive and Visual Design, and has worked as an artist, freelance designer, researcher and educator since 1993. Her practical and research interests include interaction design and visualisation; specifically interactive art, emergence, information visualisation and medical simulation. She is most interested in interactions with digital systems and is currently exploring data as a concept driver in creative work and explorations, including a visiting scientist position at CSIRO.

Jen actively pursues design, development and research. Her work explores relationships between research and practice, where practice is informed by research through stakeholder consultation and/or evaluation such as user observation and interviews. At the same time, her art and design practice informs the directions of research enquiry, looking at strongly synthesized approaches between the two –where the design artefact retains its integrity while generalised knowledge (such as design insights for other practitioners) are also generated. Her work, active in both research and practice, is a point of difference internationally for her career and contribution to the field, bringing its own set of challenges around traditional research and methods while still sustaining art and design practice. Jen has developed many interactive training applications, mostly using state-of-the-art interaction technologies and applied to medicine, space, data visualization and engineering. She has exhibited her art at conferences and contemporary art galleries in USA, Beijing, Tokyo, and Australia. A research monograph on Emergence in Interactive Art has been published by Springer International Publishing in 2017. In 2012-15, Seevinck worked with Cerebral Palsy League on a collaborative art project researching visualization and interaction design for the physically disabled. In years prior to her PhD study she worked as a research scientist on a range of visualisation projects at the Virginia Modelling Analysis and Simulation Centre in the U.S.A. (2001-7).

Experience

  • Visiting Scientist CSIRO for research and creative practice with data. March 2017-March 2018.
  • Artist in Residence, grant from The Edge State Library of Queensland for research and creative practice and exhibition inclusion in Made From Light curated program at the Brisbane Powerhouse Theatre at New Farm. December 2014-May 2015.
  • Artist and co-designer (2012- current day). Community interactive art project with Cerebral Palsy League. Regional Arts Development grant, Queensland Government. This project involves exploring and visualising participants’ movements through their drawings and co- designing (following a participatory design methodology) an interactive, visualisation artwork based on these gestures and images.
  • Artist in Residence on a Queensland Government grant (2011). This project involved co-creating an interactive artwork on site and in the forest with Grovely Primary school children aged 6-10, some with high needs. Affiliated with the United Nations International Year of the Forest. Final work is tangible, real- time visualization created using participatory design methods.
  • Research Scientist Co-Investigator on a range of research projects for medicine, space (NASA) etc (2001-2007).  Key efforts were in visualization, content and interaction design, task analysis, prototyping, and project management. Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) and Old Dominion University (ODU), Virginia, USA.
  • Associate Lecturer (1999 – 2001). Lecturing, coordinating and tutoring animation and digital media, honours supervision. Deakin University, Melbourne.
  • Consultant Designer 2000. Lead animator and graphics consultant for a virtual reality roller coaster ride “Track Attack”, still running today. Questacon National Science and Technology Museum. Canberra.
  • Associate Lecturer (1997 – 99). Lecturing, coordinating and tutoring in computer animation and multimedia. Supervision of graduate and undergraduate capstone projects. Australia National University. Canberra.
