Biography

David began his career as a software engineer for a large multi-national semiconductor manufacturer after completing his Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering qualification. In that role, he not only developed the technical skills and understanding necessary to develop complex software, he also actively participated in the organisational activities associated with improving the company’s software development capability. It was in these ‘extra’ activities that David developed a passion for learning and for creating environments in which others could learn.

David returned to university to complete his Graduate Diploma in Education, before undertaking his recently completed PhD study. In that study, his focus was on the modelling of knowledge and understanding in the domain of mathematics, with the view to the development of improved software-based learning environments that better account for the processes by which learners come to understand this highly structured domain of knowledge.

David continues to develop theory and practice with regards to the modelling of knowledge and understanding in the domain of mathematics. This research interest is paralleled by his teaching activity that spans the disciplines of Science, Mathematics and engineering-based Design and Technology, with a particular interest in the development in integrated maths-science curriculum for the middle years of education.

Teaching

David leads the teaching of the suite of secondary mathematics curriculum studies (methods) units in both the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) programs.

The focus of David’s teaching is upon bring realistic or life-related contexts into the mathematics classroom, both to generate deep understanding of the discipline but also to foster students motivation and engagement towards mathematics as a tool for doing useful work.

In terms of the pre-service mathematics teacher’s experience, David is interested in creating a developmental progression from first year discipline studies, through curriculum studies and field experience, and then onto the beginning years of teaching. Ultimately, David hopes to create a closed loop, in which graduates become mentors for pre-service teachers and encourage their own students to undertake university-level study of mathematics, including in the teaching profession,
