Biography

Background

Cameron entered the banking and finance industries where he held various management positions within banking and financial services organisations following completion of a Bachelor of Commerce in 1991. He worked in the fields of finance and investment consultancy for 9 years before commencing studies in psychology. He completed his PhD in organisational psychology at The University of Queensland focusing on organisational culture, work stressors and employee well-being. Cameron joined The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies in September 2005 and re-joined the School of Management in 2010 as Senior Lecturer. Cameron is actively involved in research related to organisational culture, identity and effectiveness including employee, volunteer and governance issues. Cameron is also actively involved in objective measures of strain, in particular, heart rate variability in workplace decision making contexts.

Cameron is both a registered psychologist and a supervisor for the Queensland Board of Psychologists, overseeing the practice of intern psychologists. Cameron is regularly invited to speak at industry and professional events relating to issues such as employee stress and performance, governance, and other human resource management issues.

Cameron’s research focuses on the occupational stress measured using both subjective and objective (heart rate variability) methods. His research examines occupational stress in combination with a variety of theoretical frameworks related to organisational culture and identification. He is actively involved in scale development activities, particularly related to the assessment of workplace values and governance effectiveness. Cameron is the recipient of a number of small and large grants including an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant.

Cameron’s supervision of research higher degree students includes:

  • Exploring organisational culture and employee change attitudes in nonprofit human service organisations
  • Organisational identities and internal communications in public sector shared service arrangements
  • Financial literacy and decision making in superannuation
  • The role of trust and the use of budgets in nonprofit and for profit sectors
  • Knowledge management in federated organisations
  • Organisational culture and values and their impact on program evaluation in Australian philanthropic foundations (Masters)
  • Organisational value congruence in mergers and acquisitions
  • Heart rate variability and stress in decision making
  • Scale development to assess nonprofit governance effectiveness
