Biography
Area of research
Marie’s particular interest and focus is on the critical role that service users themselves can play in planning, development and evaluation of the services they use. She has been involved in both qualitative and quantitative research endeavours, and has undertaken collaborative projects with human service organisations and with the service users of human services.
Her close involvement with community organisations has always informed her teaching and is also reflected in her publications. Her research has convinced her of the value of the learning from “lived experience”, and the critical and, perhaps, emancipatory role of research in the unsilencing of the voices of people with disabilities and other marginalised groups of people.
Awards
- November 2006: Staff Achievement Award for Outstanding Teaching Performance and Contributions as Assistant Director (Teaching and Learning)
- October 2007: Vice Chancellor’s Performance Award – in recognition of a significant and superior contribution to the work of the University

- 2008: ARC Discovery Project Grant – Realising an ‘ordinary life’ for people with intellectual disabilities: Developing a theoretical framework for group home outcomes. With Professor Christine Bigby (LaTrobe University), Professor Jim Mansell and Dr Julie Beadle-Brown (University of Kent, UK)
- 2006: ARC Discovery Project Grant – Moving Beyond Crisis Management: Creating a Future for People with Disabilities Living with Ageing Parents. With Professor T. Parmenter, Associate Professor R. Stancliffe and Dr M. Donelly (University of Sydney)
- 2004: ARC Linkage Project Grant – Developing an Integrative Active Ageing Model for Policy Makers and Service Providers to Support Older People with a Lifelong Intellectual Disability. With L Buys, G. Boulton-Lewis & H. Edwards (QUT) and C. Bigby (LaTrobe)
- 2009: Australasian CRC for Interaction Design – Accessible Interactions. A collaborative project with Endeavour Foundation to develop digital applications and tools to assist Endeavour service users’ access to and participation in online sporting and cultural activities
- 2008: Faculty of Health Research Grant – Retirement planning with people with an intellectual disability. A collaborative project with Australian Red Cross Business Services, aimed at developing person-centred lifestyle approaches to retirement planning with older business service employees.
