Biography

Background

Born in London, Gavin was educated at Cambridge, Manchester and London Universities, and before moving to QUT, lectured for six years at Lancaster University.

He is interested in

  • using social theory to understand both the human sciences and culture
  • social studies of science and technology;
  • more traditional political sociology/political science concepts such as globalisation, liberalism and cosmopolitanism.

His books include

The Sociology of Cosmopolitanism; 

State, Democracy and Globalization;

Understanding Culture; and

Using Foucault’s Methods.
