Avril is an Associate Lecturer in Dance in the Creative Industries Faculty at QUT, where she teaches contemporary dance technique, alignment and anatomy. Avril is actively involved in the professional dance industry, maintaining a diverse performing and teaching career. Her independent performance career spans the last 15 years. During this period she has performed in many of Brisbane’s major dance festivals (Brisbane Festival and Fringe Festival) and music festivals (Livid). Avril was a co-founder and curator of the Crab Room and Cherry Herring independent performance venues in Brisbane. She joined the Australian Folkloric Dance Company in 1996, performing in both the theatre program and the school-touring program. Avril spent five years with Dance North (1997-2001), returning in 2005 for a short contract as tour manager and rehearsal director.
Avril has taught company classes for Dance North, Chunky Move and Bangarra Dance Company. She is a qualified level 2 STOTT pilates instructor. She has taught dance technique, creative movement and pilates classes for community groups (Ausdance and Brisbane City Council), amateur and professional dance organisations (Chunky Move, Bangarra, Expressions and Dance North) and across the three tiers of the Australian education system. She has designed and led community workshops, dance teacher in-services and professional development opportunities.
All of these activities are concurrent with Avril’s work at QUT and positively enhance her teaching and curricular development, facilitating the exchange and integration of current ideas, trends and practice. Avril was a recipient of a 2009 ALTC Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
