Biography

Research theme:  Managing for Resilient Landscapes Research discipline: Environmental Systems Research area Sustainable agriculture, nitrogen use efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural and native ecosystems, soil carbon sequestration mitigation strategies, simulation of agroecosystems. Coordinated the Australian nitrous oxide (in agriculture) research program (2007-2015), a $50M network of automated sampling sites funded by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources and managed by the Grains Research and Development Corporation. Current studies include the carbon balance of grasslands (OzFlux) and the SEQ Peri-uban Supersite of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN); the development of nitrate removal technologies (bioreactors) to reduce aquatic pollution; increasing nitrogen use efficiency in cotton farming systems and; Future Farm – the intersection of advanced sensing technologies for nutrient management. Represented Australia in the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases – Croplands and Soil C/N Crosscutting issues Working Groups. Peter has been active in both the developed and developing world promoting the use of simple soil assays and educating land holders in soil management for maximising long-term productivity and profitability. Adjunct appointments at Michigan State University and the Earth Institute of Columbia University (NY).
