Biography

Background: Michael has and Honours degree in Psychology and a PhD in Experimental Psychology. Since the late 1980s he has taught and been engaged in research across a number of Public Health fields, with a primary focus on the social epidemiology of mental disorders. Since the early 2000′s he has worked extensively in East Asia. He has supervised 45 PhD students, 60% of whom are international.   Research Interests Prevention of violence against children; quality of life in people with chronic disease; social epidemiological analysis of mental health in East Asian cultures

Experience

Professional Practice Michael is Director of International Programs in the QUT School of Public Health and Social Work. He collaborates with colleagues in Faculties of Public Health in East Asia and is an advisor for several international  organisations, particularly in the fields of interpersonal violence prevention and child protection. Since 2009 he has been an advisor to research programs supported by UNICEF East Asia and Pacific 0ffice in Bangkok. Much of his work has focused on PhD and Masters research training and joint efforts for development of teaching programs in Vietnam. He has worked with the Hanoi School of Public Health, Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.  He is Co-Director of the Hue Institute for Community Health Research and Honorary Professor in Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy in central Vietnam (http://iccchr-hue.org.vn). Michael is a member of editorial boards of several scientific journals based in  East Asia and the USA. He has supervised PhD  students from Australia, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, East Timor, Bhutan, the Solomon islands and South Africa.  For ten years, Michael and colleagues have managed international programs for QUT students to gain professional experience in countries such as Vietnam, China, Thailand, Malaysia and India.
