Biography

Tom is currently Professor of Mathematics Education and Director of the YuMi Deadly Centre in the School of Curriculum. Tom has been involved in studying mathematics education for over 30 years and for the past 15 years has been involved in research projects in early algebra, looking at the act of generalisation, and in Indigenous education, supporting mathematics learning in Indigenous and low SES schools and remote communities across Queensland.

Tom has co-written over 100 publications in the last 20 years and has presented regularly at national and international conferences. He has been a Chief Investigator in over $5 million of research grants,and Chief Consultant in over $1 million of consultancies.

Tom regularly conducts seminars for HDR students and has supervised over 25 PhD, EdD and MEd (Research) students to completion.

In 2007 and 2008, Tom was appointed by the Australian Federal Minister for Education as a Numeracy Ambassador for National Literacy and Numeracy Week.
