Background
Nicholas Chantler has a wide-range of practical knowledge in Intelligence and Security. He is well-travelled, with a rich experience of Eastern-block and Middle-East countries. Major Chantler, a former counter-intelligence officer in the Australian Intelligence Corps, continues to maintain his military connections through the Army Reserve. During the last few years he worked alongside Police and Intelligence Agencies in the United Nations (UN), the Office for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Union (EU). Nicholas was one of the founding members of the Australian Institute for Professional Intelligence Officers (AIPIO).
In 1996 his Doctorate studied computer hackers, the risks they pose and their psychology. It also included aspects on the security vulnerabilities of information systems and, as information becomes intelligence, the natural progression of further research of how information is used within the intelligence communities, and how it is used as Information Warfare.
Nic Chantler also has a high level of technical skills within ICT (information and communications technology); he is a hands-on technologist, not only experienced in the practical aspects of electronics, computers and telecommunications, but also with the management of large-scale systems. He has provided advice to the Committee on Protection of the National Information Infrastructure (NII).
