Biography

Dr Elija Cassidy is a member of the Digital Media Research Centre and Senior Lecturer in the School of Communication at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. His research focuses on cultures and practices of everyday digital technology use, non-use and resistant appropriation, with particular emphasis on gender, sexuality and cross-cultural use. Elija teaches several courses on digital media and research methodology and is the author of forthcoming book Gay Men, Identity and Social media: A Culture of Participatory Reluctance (Routledge).

Teaching

Elija has designed, coordinated and taught into several courses on media and communication histories, theories and principles in Australia and Hong Kong; supervised applied media and communication student projects and work integrated learning programs; and facilitated research training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels through introductory and advanced research methods courses. His current unit coordination consists of:

  • KCB206: Social Media, Self & Society
  • KCB105: Inquiry in Media & Communication
Elija also supervises a number of PhD students currently studying topics that deal with:
  • Digital diversity and inclusion
  • Digital LGBTIQ cultures
  • Digital dating/hookup apps
  • Online safety and harassment
  • Digital diasporas
