Biography

Dr Dmitry Bratanov joined QUT in 2013 as a Research Engineer at Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation (ARCAA) working on a computer vision detect and avoid system (DAA) within Project ResQu. Dmitry’s interests are in integrated INS/GPS/vision based solutions, 4-dimensional UAS navigation, geospatial analysis and environment identification. Dmitry holds BEng (Hons), MEng (Avionics) and PhD in navigation and control systems from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

Prior to QUT Dr Bratanov worked at Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Munich on the high-precision GNSS airborne gravimetry, and at Russian avionics leaders in accordance with DO-178B/C Level A.

In the Project ResQu Dmitry contributed to the improvements of DAA system and conducted the important sensitivity analysis of INS accuracy on DAA system key performance metrics. The outcomes of the analysis set a path to the system cost reduction on 5-7 times, that made a good business case for the DAA system commercialization.

Dr Bratanov lectured for ENB457, ENB354 at QUT on Software Engineering in Airborne Systems and Functional Safety. He is supervising work integrated learning students projects on airborne data visualisation using high-performance computing (HPC) of QUT’s Innovation Lab.

In 2015 Dmitry joint QUT Flight Operations team and holds CASA’s UAV Controller Certificate. He is responsible for the aircraft flight control, navigation, sensor integration, hyperspectral/multispectral/ultra HD datacollection and geospatial analysis. Over the last two years the team conducted over 70 missions for global lieders in aerospace, innovation and remote sensing including Boeing, Chevron, Australian Institute for Marine Science, PBCRC, Energex and many others.

Dmitry actively participate in numerous STEM focused activities including: QUT Robotronica, UAV Challenge Medical Express, Aviation Career Expo, QUT/ARCAA’s open days, Avalon Air show, demos for board of PBCRC, investors and entrepreneurs.
