Biography

Professor Rowena Barrett is Head of the School of Management in QUT’s Business School. With research interests in managing people, especially in smaller firms, Rowena seeks to unlock understandings of effective practice through impactful research in collaboration with industry and government. She has a sizeable research portfolio and her work has been published widely in a range of different formats and media as she seeks to engage with diverse audiences. She is a strong advocate for doing things differently and for academics to share their knowledge widely. Rowena works closely with others at QUT to build the entrepreneurial ecosystem so students have the capability and confidence to choose how they can apply their discipline knowledge and skills in the real world. She has taught across all level from large 1st year management classes to MBA and tailored executive programs.

Rowena has a PhD (University of Melbourne, 2001) on industrial relations in small firms. Her research has focused on understanding how people are managed in smaller firms, particularly given that many smaller firms operate without formalised management systems. Her research has been supported by funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), government agencies, industry and organisations. She has a sizeable portfolio of research publications including books, book chapters, journal articles as well practitioner papers and reports. As an active member of the academic community and someone keen the grow and develop the academy, Rowena spent 2.5 years on the ANZAM (Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management) Board, much of that time chairing the research subcommittee and working with the Doctoral reps.

Rowena has run or participated in a range of activities for doctoral students and early career academics while mentoring academics and supervising HDR students. Rowena has been active outside academia and in WA was appointed by Parliament as a member of the Western Australian Government’s Women’s Advisory Council (WAC) (2011-2013). A key WAC outcome was a Board Ready kit for women, launched by the WA Minister for Women’s Interests on International Women’s Day 2014. Rowena has also played key role on other non-profit boards in the health and education sectors.   The possibilities that exist in Queensland and at QUT and the potential in the School of Management occupy Rowena at present. However, she is ambitious about collaboratively engendering knowledge, skills and innovation for the benefit of the University, our students and our industry partners.
